Paris Saint-Germain have claimed their first Ligue 1 title in 12 years with a stunning 4-0 victory over second-placed Lyon at the Stade de France on Sunday.

The French champions have now extended their lead in the standings to seven points ahead of rivals Monaco and Paris St Germain have taken their place as the new champions of Europe's top tier football league.

Stéphane Millaud scored twice from the penalty spot while Mathieu Valbuena also found the net for the visitors, who were reduced to ten men after being booked by referee Jean-Michel Aulas for a handball on the 68th minute.

The win means that PSG have moved into the position of the club which they won in 2011 when they beat Lyon 5-1 in the Coupe de la Ligue final, and they will now face Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals next week.

Millaud said: "It was a great game, we had a good start but then we got unlucky with a handball.

"However, I'm very happy to be back in front again."

Lyon boss Didier Deschamps praised his side's performance despite missing key players like Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappé.

"I thought it was a difficult match," he told RMC Sport. "We played really well and our team did not give up.

"We had a lot of chances but I think we made some mistakes."

Deschamps' side were reduced to ten men for the final 45 minutes of the match due to a booking for a handball on the 68th minute.

But they came back strong in the second half and were able to hold off PSG's late onslaught before going down.

"I thought we were playing well but we couldn't convert enough opportunities," Deschamps said. "I'm sure we'll learn from this."

And Deschamps' side's coach Thierry Henry added: "We had a bit of luck but we should have been more clinical.

"We're still working hard and trying to improve."
